Name: Magdalena 'Magda' Moreau
Age: 42
Birthday: 16th August
Birthplace: Liverpool
Languages known: English, French (fluent)
Occupation: Senior Agent with the Agency; while she still takes on field work, whether it's hit jobs or information interception, Magda's role within the organisation is more focused on training junior Agents and mentoring individuals she's personally brought in. The better these agents do specifically, the better she does out of the equation - both financially and in her bosses eyes - so it's a role she invests a lot of time and energy into.
First impressions:
• Magda is very well dressed and beautifully made up any time she's with people or in public. Her clothes and jewellery are all expensive, her hair's always beautifully done - it's obvious she has money and takes care of her appearance. She tends to favour darker colours, with a deep red lip as something of a signature for her.
• She accentuates her height with heels, and with the aforementioned sense of self-assurance and confidence, she can come off as rather intimidating.
Personality:
• If there's something Magda isn't lacking, it's confidence. She knows what she wants, she knows how she's going to get it, and once she has her sights set on something or someone, there isn't much that can deter her from getting it/them.
• With what life's thrown her way and how she had to grow up, weakness and self pity are two of the many things Magda has very little time for. She sees them as debilitating and useless, and uses the first sign of them in her proteges as an excuse to break them down and build them up stronger. She doesn't allow them to crumble under pressure or feel sorry for themselves, regardless of how that lesson needs to be taught. The world and their future work won't hold their hands and wait for them to feel better, why bother spoiling them now?
• Opinionated, stubborn and no-nonsense, she's certainly a force to be reckoned with if push comes to shove. She's willing to use cruelty and violence to get her way just as easily as she'll use sympathy and apparent kindness. When it came to her last protege, she invested a lot of patience, time and energy into building trust between the two of them, knowingly taking advantage of the girl's fragile state and developing their relationship into something close to that of a mother and daughter. Esther saw a saviour and protector in her, while Magda saw an opportunity to build something useful and strong out of the broken parts she'd taken in.
• Magda has a somewhat worrying detachment from killing and the moral questions doing so raises; she's not a complicated woman in this regard. She's motivated by power and money, pure and simple, and it's rare that someone's close to her and isn't being used to further either of those goals. She sees the world as very much 'dog eats dog', and it's been a long time since she's let anyone raise a hand to her without retribution.
• While her treatment of people - Esther especially - has been called toxic or abusive, she would very much disagree. She wasn't raised with love or being coddled - it was very much survival of the fittest when she was a preteen, which is something she absolutely channels when training others. Past agents that she was responsible for have gone on to succeed and climb the ranks within the Agency; agents she used the exact same methods and philosophies that she was trained with. In her experience, tough love and a refusal to go easy on those who have chosen their line of work brings out the qualities needed in a skilled field agent. This is also part of the reason she tends to be much harder on Esther than many others. She knows she's strong and can do what's asked of her, but Esther's apparent refusal to burn the past and take her life back Magda finds utterly infuriating.
• All this being said, on a day-to-day basis and provided she's in a good mood, Magda is generally pretty laid back. She isn't always the most approachable person, but she's far from socially inept. She can be very sharp witted and funny, and provided you can take some sarcasm here and some blunt honesty there, she's not the worst person to spark conversation with. She likes going out and socialising, she likes meeting interesting people and having a laugh. You will know very quickly if she wants you to fuck off, however.
Brief background:
Born into a family addled with dysfunction, violence and addiction, Magda's early life was anything but enviable. It was the usual, angst-ridden background; both of her parents were addicts to one substance or another, and neither had much control of their tempers. Apparently they split up when she was young, but the carousel of other men her mother brought into the family home tends to leave the exact memory of her father leaving somewhat fuzzy. Far more often than not, the kids were left to fend for themselves and, in theory, to look after one another when their mother would go out partying. This didn't always go to plan, however. Her eldest sibling had the far more desirable idea of spending her time out or with friends. So, Magda only really had herself to depend on for a long time.
Fast forward a few years, and the kids were eventually taken into foster care. Somewhere along the road, they were separated from one another, and during her time in the system being bumped from group home to group home, Magda quickly fell into habits she was far too young to develop and spent her time with adults and older teenagers that didn't exactly have her best interests at heart.
But, this isn't a story full of fear and regret; the things she did and the 'friends' she made were miles more fun than sitting around back home waiting to get smacked around or felt up by whichever boyfriend was staying the weekend. Regardless of whether or not it was right or healthy, Magda learned very young how to look after herself and how to adapt to the cards she'd been dealt. She learned how to smoke, how to drink, how to steal; how to do what she needed to do get money, or attention from the boys who could provide both.
At the age of fourteen, one dreary evening she found herself involved in a rapidly spiralling situation involving some owed money and some threats of violence here and there. Not a fan of getting knifed in a back alley, she was more than happy to go with the wealthy looking guy who came to her rescue. His name was Ezekiel, and over a meal, he explained to her what he did for a living, and more importantly, how much money that could be made.
The job title 'Senior Agent' didn't mean shit to Magda at the time, nor did The Agency; but the idea that she could learn to fight and kill and get paid for it? That she got behind very quickly.
He took her to London, got her clean, and combined her off-the-books training with an education - something she'd let fall completely to the wayside. By the time she was eighteen, she was enrolled in the Agency as an official trainee. And the rest, as they say, is history.
